This should not have been so hard...but I couldn't get in to Blogger for 2 days. My son's 2nd grade teacher had a blog this year, so I had a little experience using blogger. Still working to figure out how to add the avatar. I have one on my Yahoo account, so I should be able to do this fairly easily, right?
don't forget to put Thing #XX in your title box..look at #2 vs this one ...

Blogger was down from their side...it was not you!
as for your avatar... go back and look at the directions about using the gadget for the sidebar...you will want to understand how those work!
